I. 英译汉(50分)
英文中的hearth and home(火炉与家)是个习语,过去常常挂在人们嘴边,表示温馨的家庭生活。可是近五十年来就很少听到了。也许有人偶尔还这么说,但为什么这个习语现在用得这么少?这到底又意味着什么?
几乎可以毫不夸张地说,在人类的整个历史中,上自远古时期,下至最近的二战,火炉旁本来一直是家庭最重要的中心。无论是在洞穴内,还是在城堡中,或是在豪宅里,还是普通的民宅内,火一直是温暖的中心,无论是在家中,还是在由风障或荆棘围起来的营地里,或是在四周防护有加的永久居处,在任何一个家中,火都一直是温暖的中心。正是在火旁,在炉边,人们烧烤食物,享用食物,享尽家人和亲属间聚集一堂的天伦之乐。为了生存,人们狩猎,人们劳动,人们冲入险境,随之而来的是挑战与危险。在结束了一天的活动后,男女老少都聚集在炉火旁,这个共同的中心暂且为他们带来片刻的安全,些许的休闲和短暂的快乐。
有谁会怀疑,正是在为求生存的不断斗争中,人类学会了生火和用火;正是在炉边火旁他们开始讲故事,唱歌曲,演喜剧,寻欢乐,其中特别是故事尤为重要。人类知识与发明的星星之火预示着未来,这朵朵的火燎在广袤、漫长的黑夜中熊熊燃烧。这时,家庭宗族和部落也都开始围绕着火焰,获取新的温暖,得到新的安全。这时所有周遭的危险都被拒之于外,让人感到安全。在这个由火照亮的新的保护圈内,人类社会藉着其经年累月的想像和创造,开始了它漫长的历史伟业,要在自然世界里建立起一个新世界。
在万古如斯的尘界黑暗中终于亮起了一线光芒。那火花噼噼啪啪地直冲天空,消失在漫漫长夜之中,那金黄色的火焰扶摇而上,渐渐消失在黑色的天空中,美不胜收。这时生活在一起、有福同享、有难同当的一小群人就变得更加紧密了。他们于是讲起故事来,讲他们狩猎动物的野性,讲狩猎的危险、激动与乐趣;讲他们不断发现的新事物以及解决新事物的新方法。他们还讲自已和同伴们的性格,有的严肃,有的可笑。他们讲那些令人肃然起敬的梦想,那些有关鲜血、诞生、创造、火焰和死亡的梦。这成千上万个不同的故事慢慢便构筑成人类的习俗和文化。所有这一切都是在围绕着充满生命活力的火炉旁诞生的。这火在白天供人使用,在夜晚给人安逸快乐,也促使人想像,带来快乐与荣光。炉火和家就是这样孕育出了人类文明的基本情怀,人类风俗基本和持久的价值观,人性的基本理想也是这样建立起来的。也正是以这种方式,这此基本的东西在整个人类历史中延续不断到今天。

II. 汉译英
WELCOME TO A THREE-WEEK ENCOUNTER WITH CHINESE FOLKLORE!
To coincide with the Spring Festival holidays -- the Chinese equivalent of Christmas holidays -- College of the Humanities, Pujiang University, and Jiehua Commercial Center are going to jointly organize a Chinese Folklore Study Program.
This program is specially designed for the foreign residents affiliated to foreign firms in this city. The program will be a combination of a short-training course and an expedition tour of Chinese customs, with a view to enabling the participants to get familiar with Chinese folklore as well as Chinese tradition of lifestyles.
Senior professors and scholars from College of the Humanities, Pujiang University, will offer a series of lectures on Chinese food, Chinese folklore, Chinese ways of tea drinking, Chinese wines, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, etc. The general degree of Chinese proficiency on the part of the participants will determine whether Chinese or English will be used in the teaching.
Apart from lectures and tutorial guidance, the study program also includes an observation tour from Beijing to Xi’an (two ancient capitals in North and North-west China) and from Guilin to Kunming (two scenic cities in an area of China’s ethnic groups in South-west China). It will take only three weeks to finish the whole study program -- a short but fascinating experience of aspects of Chinese culture.
