National Crisis and Heroic People
The course of history is never even and smooth. Sometimes it is besieged with difficulties and obstacles, and nothing but a heroic spirit can help surmount them.
A mighty long river, when it comes to a broad and open terrain with plains stretching boundless, rolls on and on for thousands of miles; When it comes to an imposing and narrow section flanked by many a high mountain and steep cliff, it takes its course through the perilous twists and turns. So undergoes a nation in the course of its development.
The life of human race throughout history is aptly comparable to a journey. A traveler on a long journey sometimes traverses a broad and level plain, but at other times trudges through a bumpy, hazardous road. A determined traveler would certainly continue his journey with a light heart when reaching a place safe and smooth. However, the traveler would find a rugged place and journey more fascinating, and feel that such an enormously magnificent spectacle would inspire him more and induce the wonderful sensation of adventure.
The Chinese nation is now confronted with a rugged and dangerous phase of its historical course. True it is that a spectacle of such enormity would make those passers-by feel a delightful sensation of splendor. However, such feelings can only be shared by those with a heroic spirit.
The Yangtze River and the Yellow River both embody our national spirit well. They negotiate deserts and gorges and embrace all types of conditions and with irresistible force their turbid torrents surge forward nonstop for thousands of miles. The present national crisis can never deter the advance of our nation. Let us brace up our sublime spirits and march forward through this rugged and rough road to the tune of our solemn, majestic songs. Mind you, nothing would be found more satisfying and intriguing than to build up our country during its national crisis.
