The Promise of Two Trees
In the seasons of spring and summer, the leaves of ordinary trees turn light green and branches dark green. But here, the two trees change by turns: one grows flourishing and the other lives withered. Supposing the left tree gets green, lively and luxuriantly, the right tree begins to yellow leaves as if in dormancy, drooping, thin and dry. For the latter, the beginning of autumn would be the days of winter. But the right tree is not rotten to die. It is still alive, expecting to be rejuvenated with thick leaves and strong branches in the coming spring and summer. At that time, the left tree starts to yellow leaves as if entering in dormancy. All in all, it seems that the two trees have such a promise: the one withers this year and flourishes next year; the one flourishes this year and withers next year.
It is told by the local people that the two trees are symbols of an affectionate couple who drowned themselves in river to elude local tyrant’s persecution. They were reborn to be trees. I take it a fictioned love story. On the other hand, I prefer the explanation by a knowldged man, who believed that the two trees live in the bank of the Jinshui River and root deeply in rock crevices with little soil and nutrition. If the two trees used the little nutrition at the same time, they would be hard to grow. Therefore, the trees take turns to keep growing.
In a year, one of them is alive only, without growing up strong and sturdy, and the other tries to grow up and up. In this way, they avoid competition from worse to worse and survive from mutual death. The knowledged man said, they are co-existing trees, which is true and right!
In our daily life, we often see those who lead a vain and humdrum life rival each other without any concession. But consequently, won’t they feel disappointed and turn strangers from friends? On the contrary, Those who take overall consideration and help each other will be promoted finally. Therefore, why don’t we learn from the two trees? Let’s have mutual help and respect and co-exist to overcome difficulties altogether.
